I have always found myself incapable of writing coherent "reviews" of things, especially when I love the thing with all my heart. It always becomes a simple list of "I loved _____!" or "I absolutely loved ______!" So I won't even try to do that for Deathly Hallows.

But I do want to post my two cents about "the end of all things" and fandom's reaction in general.

There be spoilers ahead. )

After reading Tori's post and thinking about things last night, I feel pretty badly about reading book 7 early. Granted, I didn't know that JKR had made a specific request for fans to wait (just knew about her request not to post spoilers), but I should have done so anyway, purely for the principle of the thing.

Sure, I'll still act like a huge, fangirly dork at the bookstore party tomorrow night, and I'll still clutch my newly purchased book to my chest like a life preserver, and I'll still spend all Saturday completely immersed in it. But I won't be reading it for the first time, knowing that millions of people around the world are sharing that experience with me at that moment.

For not waiting to savor the book as JKR wanted me to, I apologize to her. For not waiting to share that moment with the wonderful and crazy fandom that I've enjoyed for the past seven years, I apologize to all of you.

*hangs head*

Cheers to all of you who are doing what is right instead of what is easy. :D

(Please don't post anything remotely spoilery in the comments to this post. So many people have had the book ruined for them already.)

Y'know, as much as I like to poke fun at die-hard Harry/Hermione shippers, I also know what it's like to be entirely convinced that a beloved ship has canon support, only to find the rug pulled out from under me. I was reading a thread on Portkey this morning with lots of posts along the lines of "Why did she put such-and-such there if it doesn't mean anything?" And... yeah, I know how that feels. Losing the "canon" of Remus/Sirius was extremely painful to me because I had appropriated (I bow to you, [livejournal.com profile] angua9) the ship to such a strong, personal extent. Why did she put such-and-such there if it didn't mean anything? It was there because I wanted to see it, and I still see it, even if the author didn't intend it. There's a lot of insanity in this fandom, but I don't think it's crazy to put your heart into a ship and then be crushed when it's taken away.

Y'know, ever since I read PoA I've said that Remus Lupin is my favorite Harry Potter character. But I've been thinking about that lately and realized that Remus was my favorite character largely because of PoA alone. I was sadly disappointed at the lack of his development in the later books... and I won't even go into Remus/Tonks because it makes my brain curl up in a fetal position and weep.

So then I was left with the question, who is my favorite HP character?

In terms of which character I feel the most affection for, that's Ron, hands down. Brave and funny and bull-headed and insecure and Hermione-smitten Ron. :D

But in terms of which character I think is the most well-written, the most developed, and the most interesting, that would have to be Hermione. I never thought of her as my favorite character until very recently, which is odd, considering how she fascinates me.

As my icon may indicate, my favorite Hermione quote is "I think I'm feeling a bit rebellious." Not just because it's empowering, but because I see it as the best expression of Hermione's journey in this series. (Much like Ron's "If you want to kill Harry, you'll have to kill us, too," which is why I was furious that the PoA movie gave that line to Hermione) Hermione intrigues me because she starts the series as an insecure, strictly rule-abiding little girl and gradually emerges as a fierce, confident rebel. She intrigues me because her sense of justice is so absolute and unwavering, which is both a virtue and a fault at various times. There is SPEW and her devoted effort to save Buckbeak, of course, but there is also the cruel "Sneak" incident and what could be called the attempted killing of Umbridge. She intrigues me because she "gets the point" at a very early age that the boy who drives her batty is the one who relates to her with the most humor and passion.

So consider this my declaration of love for Hermione Granger: whip-smart, conscientious, logical, stubborn, fierce, rebellious, vengeful, mothering, bossy, loyal, courageous, nagging, insecure, honest, passionate, bushy-haired Hermione--as endearingly imperfect as a character can be, except for maybe Ron. ;D Plus, she loves cats and has the best birthday there is.

Here are several random, simple icons/bases that I made from the new pictures. If you like, take. ;)

Now that I've become more coherent, here are the things I love about the new pics:

1. Umbridge. Times eleven. I cannot get over the cat plates.
2. Luna! Oh, she looks so fantastic! Evanna's eyes are perfect.
3. Hermione's hair. Still not canon, but vastly better than PoA and GoF, imo. I also love how fierce she looks. Vindictive facial scarring, crazy canaries, here we come!
4. Ron doesn't look like a clown. Only two stills, I know, but so far so good.
5. Dean! And the tall!
6. Ginny in pants = OMG TEH AWESOME.
7. Dumbledore's Army Dumbledore's Army Dumbledore's Army Dumbledore's Army Dumbledore's Army Dumbledore's Army Dumbledore's Army Dumbledore's Army Dumbledore's Army Dumbledore's Army
8. Dumbledore's Army! *bounces*

I want to see an official still of Tonks.

And last but certainly not least... Dumbledore's Army. Ladies and gentlemen, DeeDee has just died and gone to heaven.
