I'm near the end of my gazillionth read of Pride and Prejudice, and I'm struck (for the gazillionth time) by how much Jane Austen could say with so little.
Jane resolutely kept her place at the table; but Elizabeth, to satisfy her mother, went to the window--she looked,--she saw Mr. Darcy with him, and sat down again by her sister.
Sometimes I wish I could tackle Charlotte Bronte for saying that Austen's characters have no passion. Passion does not require the reader to be slapped in the face.
