So what makes DW different and/or better than LJ? They seem almost identical to me, but I haven't really looked around much.

I like that they seem to be actively working to avoid some of the, shall we say, more CLUMSY decisions that LJ has made in the past. Even though it didn't directly affect me, I'm thinking of things like Strikethrough - not so much what LJ did, but how bad they were about informing about it.
